We are not alone

I just sat in a teaching by David Nasser here at the National Worship Leader Conference in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Such a powerful message of truth – straight out of the Bible (Isaiah 41:10)

“so do not fear for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

I don’t know about you, but often times I feel afraid. Afraid that something is going to happen to one of my children when they’re away from my care. Afraid that the economy may fail and unsure of what I would do to support my family. Anxious about the future that my children will grow up in. Worried about my mom’s health that has been deteriorating over the last few years (and I’m 1500 miles away).  As a pastor, I often fear that I won’t “live up” to all the expectations other put on me.

None of this is of God, but it’s still real to me. How comforting it is to know that GOD IS WITH US. GOD IS WITH ME. No one, if they have placed their faith in Christ, is ever alone. Thank you God. Thank you God. My prayer today for you is that whatever you’re dealing with – whatever has you up at night – whatever is robbing precious moments of your life because of fear – that TODAY you would release it to God and claim this verse in your life. You are not alone and you don’t need to be afraid anymore.

Come Awake

Yesterday, we did a new song (at least for us) at Burke Community. It’s called “Christ Is Risen” by Matt Maher, and it is really powerful and beautiful.

2 Corinthians 5 talks to us about how when we accept Christ in our hearts, we become new creations. The old is passed away, and through the power of Christ we are remade.

Here’s a few lines from the song:

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling over death by death. Come awake, come awake. Come and rise up from the       grave. Christ is risen from the dead, we are one with Him again. Come awake, come awake. Come and rise up from the grave.  Oh, death – where is your sting? Oh, hell – where is your victory….

Sometimes I forget that fact. I still act the “old” me instead of living in the truth of that scripture passage. When I fall into this rut, it robs me of joy and peace in my life. It also robs my family, friends, and people I love. It makes me less useful to God. I don’t know about you, but this trap is so easy to fall into. I need to DAILY remind myself of this beautiful truth. That in Christ, I am a NEW CREATION. Wow. Death has no victory. God has the victory. So, I have the victory!

As autumn settles in and the trees all begin to change, northern Virginia is such a beautiful place. It’s breathtaking to me. And it’s also a sweet reminder of God renewing us. As the trees change colors, being made ready for winter, it reminds me that I too am constantly being remade in God’s image. As the leaves fall, the old is passed away. I encourage you to grab a leaf from somewhere and keep it as a reminder that you too are a new creation in Christ.

It’s time for us to come awake and live in this truth.

(i’ll upload some pics soon so those of you in the desert can see what REAL trees look like) haha
